Topic

Thai Coatings Industry Overview

Date Nov 18, 2009(Wednesday)
Time 16:00-17:00 pm

Speaker

Mrs. Bai Eason

Thai Paint Manufacturers Association · President

Mrs. Bai Eason earned Bachelor of Sciences and Executive MBA Master Degree in Thailand.

She was a Chairman of Chemical Industry club (CIC), Federation of Thai Industry and also founder Chairman of Thai paint manufacturers Association (TPMA).

During her 4 years term of Chairman of CIC and President of TPMA, she represented Thailand in many international Forum and seminars related to Chemical Industry, Paint Industry, Safety & Environment Issues.

Summary At present there are approximately 120 registered coatings manufacturers in Thailand producing over 400,000 tons valued at US$730 Million. Over 50% of market volume is produced by just five major international paint companies- TOA, Nippon, Akzo Nobel, Kansai and Jotun. The proportion of architectural paint produced in Thailand declined from over 90% in 1980 to 60% in 2007 due to continuous expansion of automotive industry, electrical/electronic goods, toys furniture and food industry. This represents about 50% of the total market value. In 2008 the Thai paint industry reported 5-10% growth, double the size of the country’s GDP. Despite domestic turmoil and global economic downturn, the business atmosphere seems to be better in the second quarter of this year.

Philippines Presentation

Topic

The Influence of Raw Materials from China on the Philippines Paint Industry

Date Nov 19, 2009(Thursday)
Time 16:00-17:00 pm

Speaker

Mrs. Maria Theresa Dumrique Abuel

The Philippines Association of Paint Manufacturer Inc · President

Mrs. Ma. Theresa Dumrique Abuel is currently the President of Philippine Association of Paint Manufacturers(PAPM). PAPM is a private owned, non-stock, non-profit, non-sectarian, and non-political organization which is composed of 70 member-companies who are engaged in manufacturing or sales and distribution of paint or paint-related raw materials. Mrs. Maria Theresa is also the Vice-President for Manufacturing and Operations of ADD Research Paints and Chemicals, Inc., a PAPM member company which manufactures architectural paints, varnishes and industrial paints for various industries in the Philippines.

Summary

The Philippine Coatings market is largely independent and for the most part domestic. Consequently, major players are mainly local. Due to the uniqueness of the market demands, multinational players find it difficult to stay in the game, much less participate as a new entrant. The three main related industries, Paint, Ink, and Adhesives, are very well organized and are individually represented by specialized industry associations.

A presentation of the market volumes and industry specializations as well as technical and commercial demands will be made. On the other hand, due to limited petrochemical expertise, Chemical Process Industries in the Philippines such as the Paint industry, relies heavily on imported raw materials. This makes China one of the most important sources of upstream merchandise.
