Automotive Refinish Technology Innovations and Roadmap to Comply with VOC Regulations

Automotive refinish is a niche market dominated by 4 global players, Axalta, PPG, BASF and AkzoNobel. It represents the highest level of coatings technology. Over the past 20 years, advancement of refinish technology has been driven mainly by Government regulations aimed at reducing VOC emissions. In particular, EU Directive 2004/42/CE posts the most comprehensive and challenging VOC reduction requirements for automotive refinish paints and as a result has led to significant refinish technology innovations. This Technical Workshop will make an in depth analysis of EU and US VOC reduction regulations and the technology roadmap to meet these regulations. In particular, the Workshop will focus on the following points:

- China, EU and US Regulations for VOC Reduction;
- Why VOC Calculations Must Deduct Water;
- In Which Products High-Solids Low Viscosity Solvent-Borne Technology is Sufficient and in Which Products Water-Borne Technology Must be Applied;
- Why 420g/L VOC Metallic Basecoat Can Only be Made by Water-Borne Technology.
