[2023] Technical Workshops

2 sessions of Technical Workshops were held on the second day of CHINACOAT2023 (November 16ᵗʰ, 2023) at Shanghai, P.R. China this year. Together, they formed part of the concurrent Technical Programmes of the exhibition.

The Organizer invited 2 industry experts to conduct small-class teaching in a highly interactive format, they were Prof. Long Lin, former Head of Department of Colour Science at University of Leeds, U.K., and Associate Professor KM Chen, Shanghai University of Engineering Science. Throughout the 2-hour sessions, delegates were able to bring home some fruitful behind-the-scene knowledges via intensive academic discussions and constructive exchanges.

Technical Workshop 1

Unveiling the Secrets Behind High-Margin Functional Coatings and Inks

Professor Long Lin

BSc MSc PhD C.Chem FRSC

Natura Colour and Polymer Research Limited, U.K.

Functional Coatings / Inks possess functions that are beyond decoration or protection of the coated / printed substrate. Examples of Functional Coatings include temperature-regulating coatings for buildings, infra-red invisible coatings for military uniforms, vehicles and equipment, and anti-viral coatings for furniture and garments. Examples of Functional Inks include inks for medical diagnostic sensors, inks for passports and ID cards, and inks for consumer electronic devices. Functional Coatings and Inks tend to be of very high added-values and hence high profit margins. This Technical Workshop covered the following themes, each with "real life" examples:

  • Applications of Functional Coatings and Inks
  • Types of Functional Coatings and Inks
  • Trends of Functional Coatings and Inks
  • Formulations of Functional Coatings and Inks
  • Quality Assessment of Functional Coatings and Inks

Technical Workshop  2

New Technologies of Pigment Modification and Functionalization

Associate Professor K.M. Chen

Shanghai University of Engineering Science, School of Chemistry & Chemical

Engineering Joint PhD., University of Massachusetts, MA, USA

PhD., East China University of Science & Technology, School of Chemical Engineering, Shanghai, P.R. China

Pigments are widely used in different industries, such as architectural coatings, adhesives, sealants, automotive coatings, wood coatings, printing inks, etc. In order to better show the characteristics of pigments and adapt to ever-changing application fields, it is necessary to modify and functionalize pigments to a certain extent. Pigment modification gives pigments more adaptability, while functionalization can expand the role of pigments. Among them, water-based technology of pigments has become a hot spot in the industry, where continuous introduction of innovative technologies will surely improve its comprehensive performance to a higher level. In addition to the themes listed below, this Technical Workshop also covered future technology development trend of pigments, which also became an important part of the development of coatings technology.

  • Characteristics and Properties of Pigments
  • New Technologies of Pigment Modification
  • Key Points of Pigment Functionalization
  • Current Status of Pigment Water-Based Technologies
  • Pigment Technologies Future Outlook
