Abstract:

Asahi Kasei Corporation is one of the suppliers of Polycarbonate Diol (PCD). Durability of PCD as a polymer diol compared to polyether and polyester polyols is highly recognized by a wide variety of industries. Asahi Kasei's PCD, also known as DURANOL™, is designed with excellent mechanical properties which allow the product to improve the performance of polyurethane. Properties and applications of hydrophilic, low viscosity and bio-based PCD will be introduced in this presentation.

The coating market in China is experiencing significant growth and evolving trends. China is one of the largest consumers and producers of coatings globally. The country's booming construction industry, rapid urbanization, and increasing industrialization are key factors driving the demand for coatings. Key coating trends includes 1) shifting towards a sustainable and environmental-friendly coating and 2) growing demand for high-performance coatings. Another noticeable trend is towards production localization due to the challenges and disruptions faced by the global shipping industry.

Ms. Chuanxiu Chen, who has more than 19 years of technical experience in coating industry, has been engaged in synthesis of amino resin, coating formulation development, resin and additives technical services. About the Speaker:

Dr. Wei Xia works as R&D manager at Shanghai Pioneer Chemicals. He earned his bachelor degree at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in applied chemistry. After that, he finished his master courses at National University of Singapore, followed by his phd study at Technical University of Munich. He subsequently started his postdoctoral research in polymer chemistry at Dalian University of Technology, which was financially supported by German Research Foundation. After joining Pioneer Chemicals, he is mainly responsible for the development of novel acrylic resins.

D. Neil Simpson is the Technical Director at Borchers, managing teams and coordinating collaborations globally for the coatings markets. Neil Simpson achieved his Ph.D. in polymer chemistry in 2005; leading collaborative projects in inks, coatings, water treatment and oilfield markets. His main research in catalytic transformations, controlled polymer architecture and dendritic structures have been applied to areas such as resin development, conducting polymers, pigment dispersants, hydrogels and ‘green’ polymerization. He has published13 papers, contributed a book chapter and is co-inventor on 12 patents. Neil also volunteers for the Society of Chemical Industy in the Formulation Forum, as well as the SME support group.

Abstract:

Dow Industrial Solutions Coating/Ink/Adhesive Platform has been committed to technological innovation and product upgrades in the two major areas of coating and emulsion polymerization. In the coatings industry, Dow has developed DALPAD A Plus, a low-odor and low-SVOC coalescing agent to meet the needs of architectural coatings to further improve safety and environmental friendliness. In terms of performance, DALPAD A Plus coalescing agent not only can reduce the minimum film-forming temperature of the emulsion with high efficiency, but also improve the stability of the coating, and maintain good scrub resistance and low-temperature crack resistance of coating films. In the emulsion polymerization industry, Dow will introduce DOWFAX AS-801, an anionic emulsifier that not only provides low foaming properties, but also improves the wettability of the emulsion in downstream applications.

 

About the Speaker:

Graduated from East China University of Science and Technology, joined Dow Chemical Company in 2006 and is currently the technical manager and global application technology leader for Coating/Ink/Adhesive Platform. She has long been engaged in the development and application research of various additives in waterborne coatings, including coalescing agent, co-solvents, surfactants, pH neutralizers, etc.

Effexel® OT series was designed to replace glycol, propylene glycol and traditional open time additive in eco-friendly waterborne paints. It's VOC free and APEO free. Effexel® has been shown to increase scrub resistance while minimizing impact stain resistance. Has been working at Dow (Shanghai) Holding Co., Ltd., in the I&CP business unit, serving the coatings industry for over 20 years. He has been engaged in the application development and technical service work of silicone resins and intermediates, as well as silicone additives in coatings and inks. He has a deep understanding of the mechanism of silicone in coatings and can propose targeted solutions based on the actual problems encountered by customers.

Abstract:

In case of fire, every minute counts! Intumescent coatings are one of the solutions developed to prevent the collapse of steel structures in buildings and allow people to escape safely. Compared to other passive fire protection technologies, there is no doubt that one of the advantages of intumescent coatings is their ability to preserve the aesthetics of the steel structures they are designed to protect. The choice of ingredients for their formulation is, of course, crucial to achieving the desired fire resistance. 
And the binder, as the key intumescent package (spumific, carbonific and catalyst), can greatly influence the performance. The binder not only provides the application properties of the coating and adhesion to the substrate, but also strongly impacts the durability of the system and char formation. 
This comprehensive study aims to advance passive fire protection technologies, offering valuable insights for coating manufacturers, architects, engineers, and fire safety professionals.

Abstract:

Various additives, such as dispersants, wetting agents and leveling agents, are widely formulated in the inks of food packaging to enhance the performance, including adhesion and color strength, as well as to avoid the defects. The key mechanisms of the functions of the additives are reviewed and discussed here. Several cases are shared to further highlight the high performance of the food packaging inks, which related with the additives.

 

About the Speaker:

Mr. Weijiang Yang took the role of technical leader of REZUX Chemical Co., Ltd. in 2023. He is leading the team to develop functional additives for coatings, inks and agricultural products. Before joined REZUX, he has worked in Dow Chemical as senior scientist for 20 years and worked in Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences as senior engineer for 7 years. During his past technical career, Weijiang owned remarkable awards, such as "Second Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress in 2002" , "2010 Dow Asia Pacific Innovation Award" and "Industry Distinguished Figures of the 60th Anniversary of the Coatings Industry Journal". 
Weijiang received a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from East China University of Science and Technology in 1997.

Exilva is biobased performance additive that improves the properties and solves common challenges of water based industrial, architectural and wood coatings. The strong low shear thickening of Exilva, without impacting KU and ICI gives formulators the ability to develop stable formulations with excellent anti sagging properties with good levelling. Exilva prolongs the open time, accelerates the drying process and allows high wet film thickness without cracking. We will demonstrate the technical and commercial benefits of Exilva in various types of water-based coatings.

The odor and irritation problem of special arcylates is urged to solve and seek alternatives. In this report, we have successfully developed 14 (methyl)acrlates by introducing dicyclopentenyl and ethoxylated functional groups,  and 8 of them are commercialized. The characteristics of these acrylates, as well as the application in adhesive and coating are also depicted in the report.

Dr. Huang Zhijian was graduated from Nanyang Technological University and specialized in organic synthesis. He has practical experience in research of product structures and functions, especially dicyclopentadiene-derived chemicals, as well as industrial implementation.
