Abstract:

Iron oxides are widely used as colorants in the coatings, plastics, and construction industries. Despite major manufacturing breakthroughs within the last century, the coloristic potentials of iron oxides have not been fully exploited, to date. Recent innovations focus on expansion of the current iron oxide red color range to include pigments of higher Chroma than those currently available in the market.

We show how the color of iron oxide pigments can be precisely adjusted and improved by targeted parameter control. The chromaticity of inorganic pigments is determined by particle size and shape, porosity, dopants, particle size distribution and dispersibility within the matrix material. A detailed understanding of how the individual pigment properties influence the interaction with visible light is indispensable for the improvement of coloristic properties. Superior colors are achieved by individually tuning the influencing variables during synthesis and processing. The experimental results are supported by theoretical calculations. The pigments obtained exceed the current coloristic limitations of iron oxide red pigments.

 

About the Speaker:

Dr. Christine Kathrein studied Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University where she graduated as M.Sc. in 2011. Her doctoral studies were pursued at DWI, Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials, RWTH Aachen University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She joined the business unit inorganic pigments at Lanxess in 2016 as Head of Product Development.

Abstract:

Due to stricter release control of volatile organic compound (VOC) by environment protection rules, different kinds of environmental friendly coatings like water based, UV, powder or high solid formulations now are being developed in coating industry. New Coating Additive business line of Evonik combines former Tego, Silica and Surfynol/Dynol products targeting for meeting more broad requirements of coating industry with better performance of wetting, leveling, foam control, pigment dispersion, rheology, matting effect, and other special performance by specialty resins.  This paper will introduce the whole chemistry/Coating Additives  business line of Evonik for environmental friendly formulation development, including our high performance universal waterborne defoamers which will be produced in Shanghai in 2018, there should be one or more solutions that could meet your specific requirements.

Abstract:

Cardolite has developed novel epoxy curing agents suitable for use in waterborne anticorrosion zinc rich and epoxy primers for various industrial applications. These curing agents are based on cardanol, a renewable building block that does not interfere with the food chain. They provide excellent corrosion protection, good handling and application properties, fast cure with long pot life, and formulation latitude. This presentation will cover performance test results of these new curing agents in typical waterborne primer formulations.

 

About the Speaker:

Dr. Hong Xu is the Technical Service Manager in Cardolite Corporation. She has six years of experiences with Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) based materials and a special interest in CNSL product development, coating formulations, coating properties evaluations and technical support.

 

Jing Li, MS, Technical service manager  China,  of Cardolite  Chemical(Zhuhai)Co., Ltd. He has a special interest in the product development, coating formulations, properties evaluations and technical support. Abstract:

Through special resin structure design, the viscosity of UV resin has been reduced greatly, solvent free spraying can be realized with these UV resin, and the UV curing rate, hardness, toughness, paint film adhesion, yellowing resistance, flow performance of the coating meet the application requirements.

 

Through special structure design, poor film-forming, slow drying speed, soft paint film, low gloss of water paint have been solved. Especially, the emission of VOC is greatly reduced. For solvent-free resin, it can even achieve zero VOC emission with good film performance.

 

About the Speaker:

Yunlin Zhu has been engaged in research and development coating resins for more than ten years with rich experience in synthesis of PU curing agents and UV resin.

Passive fire protection of building materials is evident to avoid fire disasters and to save lives.

Phosphorous based non-halogenic flame retardants are used to reduce ignitability and spread of flame properties of combustible building materials like wood and plastics. With synergists they can also act as intumescent coatings for the fire protection of load bearing steel constructions and thus prolonging the time for safe evacuation.

The chemistry of intumescent reaction patterns is discussed in detail as well as lab fire tests and official fire test scenarios according to national standards.

In 2001 Bernhard moved to the company’s ADDITIVES business unit where he started to build up a worldwide troubleshooting force – later he took over the technical leader position for CYTEC Coating Additives.

Paint manufacturers have been continuing to innovate "green" paint technologies to meet consumer demand and regulations.

Among of them, water based coating technology is sought strongly due to its similarity as traditional solvent based coating system in production, application etc to some extent. In China, extra resources of coating producers are invested in so called "Oil to Water" project, to meet government regulation and achieve sustainable business development. However, so many technical challenges such as film performance, liquid coating application, are still frustrating the chemists to a great extent.

All these aspects will be largely influenced by the quality of ingredient of coatings. High quality ingredients, like titanium dioxide, will influence several of these characteristics. Here we would discuss how Ti-PureTM Pigment from state of art chloride process technology can enhance the performance in WB industrial coating, to meet the challenges during the "oil to water".

Abstract:

Today’s conductive agents require loading relatively high levels, which negatively impact color and transparency, surface finish, and mechanical properties. This presentation covers a new additive, single wall carbon nanotubes, that can provide high conductivity properties at extremely low loadings in a broad range of coatings materials. At loadings  0.01-0.1% by weight, single wall carbon nanotubes form a 3D network of electrically conductive material within the host matrix. When properly dispersed in coatings, this network of nanotubes results in a minimal impact on other material characteristics, enabling color or transparency, a smooth surface finish, and retaining or increasing mechanical properties.

 

This new additive may also allow manufacturers to decrease production costs by substituting high loading level traditional fillers with low loading level single wall carbon nanotubes. Results in anti-static flooring, electrostatic painting, transparent conductive films, and anti-corrosion additives will be presented, in addition to an overview on single wall carbon nanotubes and how to properly introduce this novel filler in coating materials.

Following the waterborne acrylic polyol dispersion technology Hexion presented during the ChinaCoat in 2015, we now present convenient routes to make ultra-high solid resins using glycidyl ester of branched neo-acids (CarduraTM E10P glycidyl ester from Hexion). The simple process provides flexibility in terms of the selection of solvents, monomers, initiators and reaction temperature and enables an optimal balance of key performance parameters like VOC level, drying speed and cost. Ultra-high solid resins, provide producers that cannot immediately move to waterborne an alternative solution for very low VOC coatings.

Water-whitening resistance and rheological control are two of the critical challenges for the emulsion developers.   
Duke Polytech Corp. has developed a series of siliconized acrylic emulsions to achieve the best performance of the multi-color paints by controlling the structure of the latex microsphere in nano-scales. Abstract:

The presentation mainly discusses the applications of WB 2K PU for industrial coatings. It contains three parts. Firstly, it introduces status and challenges of some important segments in industrial coatings which WB 2K PU are applied. Secondly, some commonly used types of WB polyisocyanate hardeners and their properties are discussed. Lastly, the presentation introduces Wanhua WB 2K PU solutions together with new products in different applications.

 

About the Speaker:

Zhenhao Hu, master in Dalian University of Technology, joined Wanhua Chemical as Research Engineer after graduation in 2014 and works as Technical Support Engineer from 2015. The work mainly focuses on providing waterborne solutions for industrial coatings.

Abstract:

This seminar will introduce the latest additive solutions from Dow Coating Materials, which helps to improve the key performance and solve the issues in waterborne industrial coatings application, such as flow/leveling and sagging balance, dispersant impact to stability of waterborne epoxy formulation and improving the anti-corrosion performance. Those additive solutions would work together with high performance resins from Dow to accelerate the waterborne conversion in industrial coatings.

Abstract:

Polyurethane (PU) properties can be adjusted and enhanced by using various types of oligopolyols and diiisocyanate compound, and polycorbonatediol (PCD) consider as the best in class of oligopolyols part to formulate the outstanding PU properties. In the keen competition environment of PU industry, high performance and environmental friendly become a trend and requirement of PU industry which PCD could be applied to enhance the durability aspect in several applications such as water base, non-solvent type and UV curing. UBE as the leading in PCD technology continues to develop and introduce various new types of PCD with technical data to provide the sustainable solution and incorporate with customers to expand business in high profitability area.

 

About the Speaker:

Dr. Athapol Kitiyanan is a manager of High Performance Coating Technical department at UBE Technical Center (Asia) based in Thailand. After granted his Ph.D at Kyoto University, Japan, he continued his research as a post-doc at Nara Institute of Technology and Kyoto University in Japan for more than 3 years. Then, he backed to Thailand and started work at UBE Technical Center (Asia) from 2009. He set up the first lab-scale PCD synthesis in Thailand to serve UBE Fine Chemicals Co, Ltd. on PCD production and customers’ technical support.

The important and difficult problems about water-based color paste are stated. Tie-in skill of disperse and wetting agents is chosen from the application area of water-based color paste to afford the reasonable formulation design and solution of water-based color paste.

This report will share how to make water based acrylic resin free from micro

 gelling via Ultrasonic Emulsification - Emulsion Polymerization.

 

Furthermore, there will be two experiments to introduce the better performance of no micro-gelling resin in wood coating. One is the comparison test of

particle size and its distribution among no micro-gelling resin, traditional resin

and one kind of resin from international company, the other is the performance

test on the wood coating prepared by the above 3 kinds of resins.
